Separatist leaders meet U.S., French officials

NEW DELHI: Separatist leaders Mirwaiz Omar Farooq and Yasin Malik Tuesday met officials of the U.S. and French embassies here to apprise them of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
The two leaders, who are members of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference, Kashmir's main separatist conglomerate, are currently in the national capital to meet diplomats from various nations.
Farooq, a former Hurriyat chairman, and Malik, chief of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), reportedly apprised the U.S. and French diplomats of recent developments in Kashmir.
The Hurriyat had been criticised by the British and U.S. envoys last year for not participating in elections to the Kashmir assembly.
Farooq also met former minister Ram Jethmalani, who heads the Kashmir Committee, an independent initiative that is talking to Kashmiri leaders to find a solution to the Himalayan state's dragging separatist campaign.
Khalil Mohammed, another Hurriyat leader, accompanied Farooq during the meeting with Jethmalani. Malik, who has been critical of the Kashmir Committee's work, did not participate in the talks.
Farooq had last year supported the Kashmir Committee's call for talks between groups on both sides of the Line of Control that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan.
The Hurriyat has persistently spurned Indian offers for peace talks.
