Chennai: City-based tyre manufacturer MRF has declared a lockout at its Puducherry plant following labour unrest. For more than a year, MRF has been facing labour unrest, which began at its Thiruvottiyur plant here and later erupted at the Arakonam facility. The lockout at the Chennai plant spanned nearly a year - Dec 3, 2007 to Feb 5, 2008 - which made the state government threaten the company that it would take over the plant. The fag end of 2008 saw MRF's Arakonam plant locked out for three days from Dec 17 to 19. The lockout at the Puducherry unit came into effect from Sunday. MRF has plants in Chennai, Arakonam, Puducherry, Kotayyam (Kerala), Medak (Andhra Pradesh) and Goa. Company officials were not available to comment on the recurring labour unrest.
