Transporters threaten strike over diesel price

New Delhi: Truckers have threatened to go on an indefinite strike across the country from Dec 20 if diesel price was not slashed by 
8 more a litre, a national organisation of transporters said Tuesday.
The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) will hold an agitation in New Delhi Wednesday to press its demand. The winter session of parliament too begins here Wednesday.
Vinish Khanna, AIMTC joint secretary, told IANS Tuesday that transporters were dissatisfied with the diesel price cut of 2 announced last week.
"There is a lot of scope for the government to reduce prices of diesel further. The cut in diesel prices does not match the backdrop of a huge decline in global crude oil prices," Khanna said.
"When the global crude oil prices have reached the level of prices that prevailed in year 2004, then why is the government not willing to restore the diesel prices accordingly?" he asked.
The centre announced the reduction in diesel prices last Friday on account of falling global crude oil prices.
Khanna, however, conceded that freight rates on an average would come down by 2 to 4 percent after last week's price cut.
The AIMTC has also demanded abolition of service tax on transportation of goods and further cut in taxes on tyre by 35 percent.
