Bangalore: The wait for speed is about to get over as Intel is launching its Thunderbolt technology into the desktops by April 2012.

The Thunderbolt is next generation I/O technology which offer speeds up to 10 Gbps that is 10 times faster than the recently released USB 3.0 and 20 times faster than the popular USB 2.0. Every thunderbolt device will be having 1 input and 1 output port which avoids the need to have multiple ports in the system. Several peripheral devices can be chained together with only one attached to PC.

The technology was developed by Intel in cooperation with Apple earlier this year. It currently powers Apple’s products like iMac and the MacBook series. The wide adoption of technology for Apple’s desktops and the success of its products with Thunderbolt technology forced Intel to launch the tech into the consumer PC market, according to DigiTimes.

The Thunderbolt technology will be expensive than USB 3.0 as the chip alone costs $20 more in the US market. The prices are likely to come down in the second quarter of 2012 and the technology may be standardized gradually in the future, the report stated.

Sony and Asus are expected to be the first companies to produce thunderbolt compatible PC products in 2012. Gigabyte technology is also expected to launch Thunderbolt featured motherboard in April 2012.
