The Next Generation SD: Copy Protection for HD Content

Bangalore: The semiconductor giants Toshiba, SanDisk, Panasonic, Samsung Electronics, Sony Corporation are teamed up to create the next generation SD or Secure Digital cards. Though the microSD cards are still in vogue among mobile users, the new gen cards appear to be one of the much-awaited products in the days to come. The cutting-edge copy protection mechanism could be licensed under a new name. The new technological invention allows Android-based Smartphones, Tablets, Blu-Ray devices and other mobile computing gadgets to access copy protected, streamed HD or High Definition videos and data. According to the research group, more prominence on securing data in flash cards is exerted for the first time; a unique feature to compliment the same is the PKI or Public Key Infrastructure based Unique ID technology, offering some of the best known practices in cryptography. The group will license the new secure HD technology to flash memory and various embedded memory manufacturers upon its execution. According to Young- Hyun Jun, Executive Vice President, Memory Business, Samsung Electronics, "Samsung believes that the time is ripe for an advanced security solution and welcomes the opportunity to deliver a highly viable solution using flash memory chips. Samsung's ongoing commitment to technology excellence will now further extend to early market availability of high-performance NAND technologies implementing the new advanced security solution."
