Techies Watch Out:Hot and Happening Technologies

6. Business Intelligence

What is it? Business Intelligence refers to computing used in the identification, extraction and analysis of business data (which includes sales revenue by products or departments, or other categories such as incomes).

How hot is it? Extremely hot. This is because it is vital for businesses to be provided with the most recent trends and predictions in order to make wise decisions. BI tools also provide reminders and help manage significant amounts of data.

Why is it important? BI technologies allow for trend prediction of businesses based on historical, current and future views of enterprise operations, and thus aim to support better business decision-making. Moreover, BI tools have overreached their scope and there have been reports of their use in New York’s Fire Departments; the department used the software tool to make a record of the buildings that had been inspected of being safe for inhabitation. “Now, instead of simply conducting inspections on a cyclical basis, we're able to examine risks and the urgency of an inspection,” said Don Shacknai, first deputy fire commissioner at the New York City Fire Department. As a result, Business Intelligence Tools as well as those who know how to use them are very much in demand, and will continue to be; and not just in businesses.

How much does it pay? $108,000 per annum in Silicon Valley, and around $71,000 per annum in other parts of the US
