Kolkata: Telco Construction Equipment company, a joint venture between Tata Engineering and Japanese major Hitachi Construction Machinery, will set up a heavy earthmoving and construction equipment manufacturing facility in West Bengal, the state's industries minister said here Thursday. "The state government would initially provide 250 acres of land to the company in West Midnapore's Kharagpur district for setting up the plant. Later, 90 more acres would be distributed directly to 20 different vendors to set up an auto-component manufacturing hub," West Bengal Industries Minister Nirupam Sen told reporters here Thursday. He said the deal has been inked with the West Bengal Industrial Development Corp (WBIDC) and the land has been handed over on a 99-year lease. Telcon will invest 6 billion at Kharagpur. Additionally, 5 billion will be invested to set up a component manufacturing hub for vendors. "The plant would create 1,000 jobs initially, with a potential for creating 4,000 jobs once it starts full operations," Sen said, adding the land has been given at a rate of 9,00,000 per acre. Talking to the media, Telcon managing director Rana Sinha said the plant would come up by 2011 in three phases. This apart, a research and development (R&D) unit with advanced facilities would be set up in Kharagpur. Outside Japan, the R&D unit in Kharagpur would be the first one to be used by Hitachi as a sourcing hub for company's global operations. Established in 1999 as a wholly owned subsidiary of TEL, Telcon inked a joint venture agreement with HCM in 2000 and divested 20 percent of its equity to the Japanese construction equipment giant. HCM is a leading construction equipment manufacturer with a turnover of around $5 billion. The company has manufacturing bases in Japan, China, Indonesia, the Netherlands, France and the US, and specialises in excavator technology.
