CHENNAI: Top corporate houses were among the winners of the Confederation of Indian Industry's (CII's) annual national energy conservation awards. Among the 12 winners of the Excellent Energy Efficient Unit Award were the Reliance Industries unit in Hazira, Tata Engineering in Chikhali, Ranbaxy Labs in Toansa, Orchid Chemicals in Alathur, ITC's Bhadrachalam unit, Godrej and Boyce in Mumbai and Hero Cycles in Ludhiana. Tamil Nadu power minister Nainar Nagendran gave the awards for 2002 away at a ceremony here late Tuesday that marked the opening of the CII's two-day Energy Summit here. Energy Efficient Unit awards were given to 14 other companies. The CII appealed for a switch of all pump sets used for agricultural purposes to solar sets to save electricity subsidies that governments grant. It noted that the 1.6 million recorded pump sets in the country used 10,000 million units of power. Nagendran boasted that Tamil Nadu had not only significantly boosted its electricity generation but also led in production of alternatives like solar, wind and nuclear energy.
