Tanmanjeet Singh - the youngest mayor in UK

Bangalore: Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi has been named as the mayor of Gravesham at the annual council meeting of Gravesend Council of United Kingdom. At the age of 32 he boasted the record of being the youngest Sikh Mayor and second youngest mayor in the history of Gravesham. Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi hails from Raipur village of Jalandhar. He is the son of Jaspal Singh Dhesi and Dalwinder Kaur Dhesi and was born and brought up in the United Kingdom. He went to join the Labour Party after completing his studies and in 2007. He was elected as the councillor from the Northfleet North. He was the deputy head boy in his local Gravesend Grammar School and attended the University College London, Oxford University and Cambridge University. Election was contested for 44 seats of the council and was being governed by Conservatives. It was held on May 5 and the results were declared on May 6. Labour got 25 seats while Conservatives trailed with 19. The Labour party councillors held a meeting on May 7 and unanimously elected Dhesi as mayor. He was declared mayoral candidate by the Labour party even before the election. He has been elected by majority of Labour councillors in Gravesham council in the south-east county of Kent and this is also the first time that there have been five councilors of Punjabi origin elected from Gravesham.
