Tamil Nadu industry wants state-level competitiveness council

Chennai: The state chapter of industry lobby Confederation of Indian Industry, CII-Tamil Nadu (CII-TN), wants a state-level council to be chaired by the chief minister, it said here Thursday. "The state is ahead in manufacturing as compared to many other Indian states. However, the government is not clear as to what the manufacturing sector needs - incentives or infrastructure (physical and social) - to be competitive," said CII-TN chairman Manikam Ramaswami. "We have submitted a proposal to the state government to form Tamil Nadu Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (TNMCC) at the state level similar to NMCC," Ramaswami told reporters on the sidelines of a summit organised by CII-TN. NMCC or the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) has been set up by the central government to provide a continuing forum for policy dialogue to energise and sustain the growth of India's manufacturing sector. "There is a need for a council that feels the pulse of manufacturing in the state and strives to improve it through focused initiatives is what is needed at the moment," Ramaswami added. According to the concept paper submitted to the government, the proposed council's role should be to promote the development of the manufacturing sector's competitiveness and translate it into promoting at the individual firm level. According to CII-TN, the TNMCC should be chaired by the state chief minister as a senior policy maker and will have representatives from the government, industry and academia.
