Takhar wins gold medal in men's singles sculls

Bangalore: Bajranglal Takhar an Indian rower who won the first individual rowing silver medal for India at the 2006 Asian Games held in Doha has now broke his own record today by becoming the first ever Indian rower to win a gold medal in the Asian Games by winning the men's singles sculls competition. Chinese Taipei's Wang Ming Hui (7:07.33) took the silver while Iraq's Haeider Hamarasheid (7:10.10) won the bronze with a third place finish. With Takhar's feat, India's wait to get its second gold medal at this edition of the Asian Games also ended. So far, two silvers came India's way in rowing and a bronze in shooting at the Asian Games Thursday, while two medals were in sight in golf and one in boxing. Badminton medal hope Saina Nehwal crashed out of the women's singles while tennis star Sania Mirza advanced. After six days of competitions, India slipped further to 12th place in the medal's tally with a mere 16, comprising two gold, seven silver and eight bronze. China head the table with 202 medals (109-47-46), followed by South Korea-109 (37-30-42) and Japan-106 (21-45-40). North Korea, Iran, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Chinese Taipei, Uzbekistan, Malaysia and the Philippines are the other countries above India.
