Tablets in Business

Bangalore: Its very uncommon to see a garbage truck have a slick Samsung tablet using it to perform certain operations. But yes these technology devices have made their way into our day-to-day professional life and have been wide spreading across all business verticals but there are some hard lessons by companies who were early adopters of these technology devices reports Chris Murphy to information week.

A couple of months ago, the waste management department equipped around 20 of its garbage trucks with an impressive 7- inch tablets, which had an inbuilt software developed to track routes and pick up instructions. This was an attempt by the management to test whether incorporating such technologies could help save cost and improve performance or not, instead of deploying industry-specific devices to replace its traditional way of paper based routing process.

The lesson what this waste management department learnt was the drawback of the tablet, the crews who carried these tablets on the road would run out of power because on-board charging system no longer worked with the tablets hence the Waste Management’s telecom carrier sent an update to the tablet’s Gingerbread Android operating system.

After facing the set back now the waste management is counting on the project and has high expectations they will decide forthcoming months whether to use tablets in its 20,000-some trucks.

Waste management is just an example tablets are wide spreading these days in hospitals, boardrooms, cockpits and warehouses. They are being used for sales and are tested on the battle ground as well. The "consumerization of IT" is resulting in companies easily adopting easy-to-use gadgets, but organizations encounter with the tablets with their early experience reveals that that it still takes creative IT work to make these tools do what companies need them to do.
