NEW DELHI: In a move that may have a long lasting effect on the IT and ITeS industry, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has put on hold the reduction in international bandwidth tariffs till October 3. The telecom regulator had earlier this year announced a 64 percent cut in international bandwidth but withdrew the order yesterday after India’s largest telecom traffic carrier Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) challenged the order in the Telecom Dispute Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT). The TDSAT had asked the TRAI to keep the order in abeyance after it observed that there was no need to introduce the new tariffs until the matter was heard. VSNL first challenged the order in April this year saying that as there was enough competition in the market, let the market forces decide tariffs and there was no need for the regulator to intervene.
