BANGALORE: Signal processing solutions vendor Texas Instruments (TI) sees third party software developers as a key part of its growth plans in India. According to a repot in business daily, several elements of TI’s work in the country are driven by its development partners, including building applications for the OMAP platform, which comprises a range of processors, software infrastructure and support network for the rapid development of internet appliances, wireless handsets, PDAs and other multimedia-enhanced devices. According to Sham Banerji, head software development, Texas Instruments India, the application development by third party vendors has increased substantially in the last few years. Today, over 50% of the application development for the OMAP platform is undertaken by third party software vendors. TI has roped in Sasken and Wipro Technologies among others to work on OMAP-related software development. TI currently has over 40 third party vendors working on various software development initiatives. Banerji said while TI is not looking to dramatically scale up this number, it will look to allocate more high-end work to these companies. The number of design-ins (software shipped on TI’s platforms), contributed by third party developers has risen from just a handful two years ago, to over 50 today. Banerji also said the Indian embedded software market (exclusive of services) held great potential for vendors. According to a recent Frost and Sullivan study, the size of this market is around $700 million. It is growing at 30% annually. He also indicated that Indian vendors were increasingly being recognised for the quality of their offerings. Three of five companies capable of working on high-end video conferencing software based on the OMAP platform for instance, were based in Bangalore . (Source: Economic Times)
