CHENNAI: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is aggressively expanding its operations in Chennai. The company has inked a lease deal to take a 1.25 lakh sq ft property on the city’s IT corridor. This expansion follows TCS’s deal with SSI, about six months ago, to take on lease a two lakh sq.ft offshore development centre at Vadapalani in Chennai for three years (renewable for another 3 years). The Vadapalani facility, with 2,000 people capacity, has gone operational. The new property at Karapakkam on the IT Corridor (near Cognizant’s facility), has been taken at an attractive rental of Rs 20-21 per sq ft per month. TCS has taken possession of the property, and interior works are on. The facility will be ready early ‘04. With this, the number of software development centres for TCS in Chennai has gone up to eight. TCS is also in the process of setting up its own facility on 70 acres in Siruseri on the IT Corridor, Chennai. It was scheduled to be completed in the next three years. Sources say TCS has plans to increase its staff strength in Chennai to 10,000 this year end, from about 7,000 now. Chennai employs the maximum TCS employees, followed by Mumbai.
