Symbian opens India subsidiary

BANGALORE: Symbian revealed that it has set up a direct presence in Bangalore through a wholly owned subsidiary — Symbian Software India Pvt Ltd.
Symbian develops and licenses Symbian OS, the mobile operating system for advanced, data-enabled mobile phones, also known as smart phones, to the leading handset manufacturers.
Symbian has been operating in India since 2003 in partnership with MphasiS Technologies, which runs an offshore development center in Bangalore that has a team of over 150 engineers. The company intends to recruit in India during the second half of 2005, and beyond, in order to expand its Bangalore development activities, Symbian said.
Symbian currently employs 1,000 software engineers worldwide. The Bangalore development teams will focus on core Symbian OS and application technologies and product development to meet Symbian's growing customer and product requirements.
"We are happy to deepen our commitment to India in order to work with undoubted skills and expertise of the Indian software engineering community," said Joakim Nilehn, Vice-President, deputy head of software engineering, Symbian.
