Sybase sets up shop in India

PUNE: Sybase Inc. has opened its India development center at Pune. The new facility, Sybase Software (India) Pvt. Ltd., which is the Indian subsidiary of Sybase Inc., will deliver core data management and data warehousing products for the unwired enterprise. Nasscom president, Kiran Karnik inaugurated the center. Sybase information technology and solutions group Sr. VP and GM, Raj Nathan said that the Pune center would support the regional market, offering tech support to the Sybase products. "The principal goal is to create differentiated IP in Pune that furthers Sybase' business worldwide. Initially, an extension of existing development centers, the Pune center will start independent product development from the year 2005," he asserted. Nathan pegged the investment in Pune between $8000 to $10,000 per person and said that the investment spend would touch around $5 million per year in the Indian operations. Sybase is an independent software vendor delivering end-to-end solutions for the unwired enterprise. The India center will cater to two areas – infrastructure and solutions expertise. In the area of infrastructure, Sybase would work on data management, data warehousing and data services, whereas the company would be engaged in information management, information integration and mobility in the solutions space. Sybase has four offices in India that primarily function as marketing offices. The company has an active user base of 350 in India and the customer base is growing in the BFSI segment. "We focus on four key verticals in India – BFSI, pharma, FMCG and manufacturing," Nathan said, naming HDFC, Indian Railways and BSNL as the top Indian customers.
