HAMAMATSU/TOKYO: Suzuki, which was to roll out its motorcycle operation in India in '04, will postpone the launch till the autumn of '05 because of procedural delays. According to Shinzo Nakanishi, managing director (board member), Suzuki Motor, the motorcycle operation, which started out with a $10-m FIPB approval, will invest “quite a lot more”, and may also include scooters in its product range. To begin with, however, the plant will roll out motorcycles in the popular executive range (110-125 cc) despite the multiplicity of products in that segment. “The 110-125 cc segment sees the largest demand, so, that’s our debut segment,” Nakanishi said. While Suzuki officials were tight-lipped about the possible pricing of the debut product, Nakanishi said the effort will be to “try and give the most economical bike”. However, the plant, for which land has been acquired in Haryana, will not cater to the export market because Suzuki already has assembly plants in the big step-thru markets of Asia including Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia.
