TOKYO: Japanese automaker Suzuki Motor Corp. Monday said it would set up a vehicle assembly plant and a new diesel engine factory in India to boost production in that country's growing market, Xinhua reports. Suzuki said it and its Indian subsidiary Maruti Udyog Ltd. would jointly establish a company in Haryana state near Delhi to assemble cars. The company, tentatively called Suzuki Maruti India and Suzuki's second production base in the country, will have an annual production capacity of 250,000 units and start production at the beginning of 2007, Suzuki said. Details such as the total investment in the company have yet to be decided, it said. Suzuki also said it plans to set up another company in the same state to make diesel engines for automobiles from the end of 2006. The company will have an annual output capacity of 100,000 units. Suzuki said it would produce a 1.3-litre, four-cylinder engine with technological assistance from Fiat Auto of Italy and Adam Opel AG of Germany. Suzuki has been manufacturing small-size vehicles in India since December 1983 through Maruti Udyog, which is 54.2 percent owned by Suzuki. Its current production volume there is some 500,000 units a year.
