Sun to set up bioinformatics center

KOLKATA: Sun Microsystems India Private Limited, the wholly owned subsidiary of $11 billion Sun Mircosystems Inc., US, has planned to focus on bioinformatics sector in India and to set up a competency centre for bio-sciences in Hyderabad. "We are focussing on the bio-science sector, which has huge growth potential in India. We are setting up a competency centre for bio-sciences in Hyderabad jointly with the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD)," Bhaskar Pramanik, managing director, Sun Microsystems India, said here on Wednesday. The project called 'Sun Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology and Medical Informatics' would be a joint endeavour with CDFD and the Andhra Pradesh government as partners, he said. This would follow the company's tie up with IIT, Delhi, for a similar venture, to be linked to the Asia Pacific Centre for Life Sciences set up in Singapore in association with the Singapore government, he said.
