BANGALORE: Sun Microsystems India plans to expand its direct presence in the country to about 20 cities by tapping newer market segments with its range of products and services, from its existing six by the end of this year. The product line up of the company includes storage, software solutions and services. The company had clocked a 29 percent growth this year and this expansion is intended at penetrating into sectors like retail, healthcare and government, said M.B. Sam, Director, Marketing, Sun Microsystems India. Recently made a GEM (geographically established market) by the parent company, the company now has a separate profit and loss account. However, the India revenues would continue to get merged with the company's Asia Pacific revenues. "We expect to sustain our growth momentum and aim to grow at double the market growth rate going forward," Sam said adding that the company had already attained dominant position in the high density computing market like telecom and banking and ITeS sectors. In 2005, Sun had 55.6 percent market share in terms of unit shipment in the non-x86/Unix server market according to IDC. Almost 90 percent of the telecom traffic in India and 7 of the top banks are routed through its servers. Sun is currently looking at getting hold of higher customer base in the new segments, which would be done through its channel partners. Additionally, the focus would be on the SME segment where the company would be looking at increasing its volume growth with price points matching the requirements. Server products of the company have been gaining high proceeds. Officials say that Sun expects to double its market growth in two years. Recently, Sun launched a control center in Chennai to provide alerts to global customers on any probable difficulty in the IT systems and offer solutions for the same. The center will begin with 100 people and scale to about 300 in a year's time.
