Suman Rakhit's NeurAxon raises first round

ONTARIO: Dr. Suman Rakhit founded NeurAxon Inc., a Mississauga, Ontario (Canada)-based biotech firm, has raised a C$2.5 million first round, reports CanadaIT.com. Ventures West led the round with participation from H.I.G. Ventures, NeuroVentures Fund and Genesys Capital Partners. NeurAxon is an early stage research and discovery company focusing on pain management. Established in 2004 as a spin out of MCR Research Inc., a Toronto based medicinal chemistry company, NeurAxon plans to develop and commercialize novel small molecules that interact with established molecular targets that have been shown to play a broad role in pain management. Dr. Suman Rakhit, NeurAxon's Chief Scientific Officer, was earlier the Founder & CEO of MCR Research. He has worked with Ayesrt, Biomega/ Boehringer-Ingelheim and NPS/Allelix. Dr. Rakhit obtained his PhD in pharmaceutical chemistry from Banaras Hindu University in 1957 and a Masters in Pharmacy in 1953. He has held several adjunct professor appointments at University of Toronto, Queen’s University, University of Waterloo and York University.
