Kolkata: Hundreds of students in West Bengal, protesting IT company Wipro's decision to recruit engineers as business process outsourcing (BPO) employees, Monday met state IT Minister Debesh Das to air their problems.

The students, who were earlier selected for engineering jobs by the IT major, say the company is now recruiting them as BPO employees.

"We met the IT minister today (Monday). He told us that he will look into the matter," Sayantan Mukherjee, a student of Bengal Institute of Technology, told IANS.

"We were promised jobs in the company after we complete our engineering courses in 2009. But last week we were asked to join as BPO employees," he said.

Mukherjee got Wipro's offer in March 2007 for the post of project engineer, but was later asked by the company to join its BPO division.

"Moreover, the company is asking for a bond money of 75,000 for the BPO job, which is unheard of in the industry. Usually project engineers are asked to deposit money, not BPO employees," he added.

However, when contacted, a Wipro official told IANS that the decision was taken to give opportunity to graduates to start their work without any delay.

"Every year campus joining is spread out over the four quarters. This is done for logistical reasons of training and seating. Due to current business scenario we estimate delays in joining dates of some batches of recruits," Pradeep Bahirwani, vice-president (talent acquisition), Wipro, told IANS from Bangalore through an email.

"We are providing them an option of a technical support role in our BPO division. The objective is to let engineering graduates commence work without delay," he said.

Bahirwani added that the employees would have an opportunity to move into the technologies business in 12-18 months based on business demand. "The annual compensation will remain unchanged as per the original offer letter and those not wishing to exercise this option would have to await their joining dates for the technologies division."

Mukherjee said similar things were happening in other states like Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. The students over there were also protesting against the decision, he said.

3: I have been called crazy. Thanks for the compliment. But then you know I have a name, and you are simply an IT professional. I will always have a name and you will always remain an IT professional. You know Dhirubhai Ambani, I have an immense respect for him, started off his career as a delivery boy in Shell. Today his empire hires people from IIMs and IITs. Get inspired fellow. You might start off being a cleaner, but then whether you remain to be so needs to be decided by you. You have to carve your own destiny. I have always believed that I must be respected by my deeds and thoughts and not for my qualifications. Even qualifieds commit crimes, even the qualified protests, but a person with good healthy intentions, great ambitions, and a die hard determination is hard to be neglected and insulted. Ofcourse, I am a shameless fellow, if you call so, if I would listen to the complaints of my customers in a call centre and innovate designs that is customised enough not to generate such issues in future. That is the way I respect my qualification. I am an MBA from an institute not of much repute but then I am sure that an organisation is known by its products and so be it. Currently, I am the Business Analyst to the CEO of one of the best organisation of the country rated by many business magazines and journals. My CEO (a true Indian) is a simple graduate, a business tycoon and regarded as one of the richest man in the country, and also the most respected one. I remember starting off my career selling FAX rolls on the streets of Mumbai.

Engineers never look for jobs, they engineer jobs.

4: The current market situation is so horrible, that if one doesnt take up teh job they are getting, they are the ones who will be missing out on a lot of things. Besides eveyone knows what kind of engg grads pass out from colleges. They are mostly cribbing as if they were born with silver spoons in their mouths. They first need to know how the market situation is and act accordingly. You guys can use this as a learning curve and develop your business etiquettes etc so that you are prepared to take on higher challenges and better paying jobs than sit and crib to a govt who cannot do anything for you. Better luck people.

5: My dear IT Professionals (mainly aspiring), seems u've misunderstood some of the comments here and are bouncing back. Realise the current market scenario and then react. In the article its wrongly mentioned that the jobs which Wipro offered now are BPO jobs. If thats the case, engineering grads shud feel happy. Coz, they are not any call center jobs... Also, the quality of the engineering grads coming out of the universities across our country is well known to all. During their work at the call centres, they can definetly step up their other skills too... So take this as an opportunity and then move to technologies when there are openings... All the best brothers & sisters.. do not miss any offere thats coming to you... politicians are the useless buggers who can't understand this concept. so better stay away from them and think wisely..

6: India, in general, and West Bengal, in particular, appears to be creating a culture where people run up to the government crying for help. “We were promised jobs …” is different from having a contract that can be implemented via the courts. The engineering graduates have an option not to join the BPO jobs if they do not like them. Of course, if the economy is soft and there are a few engineering jobs, the graduates may have no option but to take up whatever jobs that are currently available. I do not also see anything wrong with the requirement for a bond. In 1959, I gave a bond for Rupees fourteen thousand for a central government job at Kharagpur. That was my earnings for six years. There were times that I felt the discomfort of a bond but I survived. I suggest to my young engineering friends that they take an opportunity given by the reputable company and move up the ladder by doing exceptionally well.

7: Come on in today's scenario freshers should not crib, your learning curve is in the 1st 4 to 5years, one has to understand all that need to learn i.e gaining work experience,
then at the end of 4th year you need to plan the next 5years.
Freshers have to ask Q's to their seniors who passed out in 2001/2002, what is their current status how do they view their future.
Your answer would be negative on most cases, IT segment needs time to come out of the current downward trend. Yes, every business has the ups and downs, just like your marks
beginning of the 1st year it is average only during the final year you score the best results. similarly business have the curves, it is upto each organisation to ensure they understand that and take measures that they bounce back.
Wipro, Infosys, TCS and Satyam will be back in bzns. They have envisaged these problems and prepared to handle such situations.
WIPRO is a great company to work ethically.

8: @Arif

Are you crazy? Where do you work? What is your job role over there? Do you mean that the work profile of a call centre executive is as good as it is of an IT professional? Do you expect an IIM pass out to join XYZ company as a house cleaner? May be that belongs to a different business unit of the same organization which earlier offered him a Business Consultant job profile. I think you don't have any self respect and respect for your qualification(if you really have any). Shame on you. But others are not like that.

It's not about the tough ground of Bengal this should't happen at any part of our country since these budding engineers have a lot to offer to this industry.

9: Mr. Kulkarni is an honourable man. A Stanford undergraduate who had to leave his studies due to the sudden demise of his father and then comeback and manage the family's fledgling vegetable oil business taking the entire wagon into a different arena in IT and ITes through his smart speculation, is ofcourse a matter of shame, because Mr. Kulkarni said so, and Mr. Kulkarni is an honourable man. Thenafter, these bunch of engineering students, who are from private local engineering colleges like Techno India or IEM, do not understand the head and tail of the global economy. They have again acted truly like the species there, that they would protest without knowing how tough it is to secure a job in life. Ask an intelligent fellow who could not pursue his studies because of the financial crisis or prevailing ailment in the family. You are to make your job look like what it is.

10: We Indians are great. We blame the politicians for every thing wrong happening in our life. Now as you see, the whole nation is up in arms against the politicians for Mumbai terror strike. And we, the same Indians dont feel ashamed to knock at the doors of the politicians for our own selfish motiff or personal problems. If you have any problem with the offer from Wipro, sort it out with them or leave it. Why bring the politicians into this ?

12: Shame on Wipro...

13: While its not right that they are placing them elsewhere and not as promised, the good thing is that Wipro is still offering them jobs and also not reducing the promised compensation so at least these employees will have something to look forward to instead of being jobless with the current market scenario. Its totally upto the student if they dont want to join, they always have the option to not join and be jobless or look for alternatives which is not easy with the current market standing.

14: After Tata, its wipro in tough grounds of Bengal.. but its really unfair to recruit people for one position and finally land them up in a complete different one.. im sure the scope for the engineers will decrease if this shift is made...
