Steel production up by 3.7%

NEW DELHI:The total production of finished steel during April 2004 to March this year was provisionally estimated to be about 38.325 million tons, an increase of 3.7 percent over the same period in the previous fiscal. The estimated consumption of finished steel during 2004-05 was 33.40 million tons compared to 31.169 million tons for the corresponding period last year- a rise of 7.2 percent- according to an official release. The total production of pig iron during 2004-05 was estimated to be 3.170 million tons against the production of 3.764 million tons during the same period last year, a decrease of 15.78 percent. Similarly, the consumption of pig iron during the last financial year was 2.90 million tons, which was lower by 11.12 percent compared to 3.263 million tons during the corresponding period in the previous fiscal. The export of steel during last financial year has been estimated to be 4.20 million tons compared to 5.519 million tons in the corresponding period in the previous fiscal, a decrease of 23.89 percent.
