All the 25 state capitals will have BSNL's mobile telephony services by next month, said union communications and IT minister Pramod Mahajan on Monday.

KOLKATA: He said the government plans to come out with a comprehensive policy on private players in next two-three months. In spite of getting private operators for many of the state capitals, the BSNL would make available its mobile services in all state capitals except Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi by the first week of October. By December end another 850 cities would be brought under the mobile network and by March 2003 all the districts of the country would have mobile telephony services. The government's plan was to connect all tehsils with mobile network by March 2004 and by 2005, each and every area of the country would have such facilities, Mahajan said. He said the government was trying to formulate a comprehensive policy that allows several private telecom service providers instead of just a few, adding "we have to think about proper management of spectrum." A clear picture would come during next two-three months when a decision would be taken in this regard, he said. The minister said the plan was to go beyond four licenced operators. "We should have upto seven players," he said, but added that he did not think that Wireless Local Loop (WLL) would be fully connected. Mahajan said like telecom he would like to take Information Technology too to the masses. "Last few years had been bad for IT industry and slowing of world economy has also complicated matters, but still the industry had done better compared to others." Mahajan expressed confidence that Indian IT industry would maintain 35 per cent growth during the current financial year. He said world over telecom industry was facing troubled times, but in India it was still moving ahead. "We are trying to resolve such problems as revenue sharing with private operators."
