Sony to present its new roll-up video screen
Bangalore: Sony has developed a prototype flexible colour video screen, which consists of an ultra-thin flexible material covered in organic semiconductors. The new video screen, which will be presented Thursday at a conference on the sidelines of the Society for Information Display (SID) exhibition in the US city of Seattle, is "the world's first" and is small enough to be rolled around a pencil, claims Sony. On its flexible Organic Light Emitting Display (OLED), Sony said that even after 1,000 cycles of repeatedly rolling-up and stretching the display, there was no clear degradation in the display's ability to reproduce moving images. Apart from Sony, public broadcaster NHK (Nippon Hoso Kyokai) also worked on developing long-lasting flexible displays in recent years. Department of New Energy and Industrial Technologies (Nedo) of Japan is also on the same path by leading a research programme to create a manufacturing chain for the displays similar to the way newspapers are printed.
