Sony eyes 42 percent market share by fiscal end

Chandigarh: Sony India has set eyes on a market share of 48 percent (higher than the national target of 45 percent) in compact digital still camera in North for 2010-11 fiscal. The company expects to end the current fiscal with a market share of 42 percent in Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, J&K and Punjab. "The estimated market size of compact camera segment in North is expected to be around 80,000 in FY 2010-11 and we aim to sell 38,000 units of compact cameras next year. At present, the region contributes five percent to the national sales of the company," Takahiro Hirata, Product Head, Digital Imaging Sony India told Financial Express. The company plans to ramp up the number of business partners (cyber shot outlets) from the current 225 to 250 in the next year. "Nationally, we have about 2,800 business partners and plan to reach the 3,000 mark during the next fiscal. A budget of 500 million has been kept aside for promotion and advertisement activities involving print, electronic media, online, outdoor and shop-front. We will spend around 25 million in North for the same," said Hirata. Compact Camera Segment in India is currently estimated at 1.3 million units and is expected to grow up to 1.8 million units by FY 2010-11. Sony India aims to achieve 45 percent share in the compact camera segment by next fiscal, up from 42 percent in FY 2009-10. In 2008-09, company's market share in compact camera segment stood at 38 percent. Sony aims to sell more than eight lakh units next year, up from 5.5 lakh units in FY 2009-10.
