NEW DELHI: If Japan-Swedish mobile device major Sony Ericsson has its way, the company might soon be manufacturing its brand of mobile phones in India. The company is at present evaluating the possibility of manufacturing of handsets with the help of its global vendors. "India is a huge market for us and we are evaluating the manufacturing option over here. But any final decision in this regard, will be taken by our business partners to whom we outsource most of the production of mobile phones," informed GM of Sony Ericsson India, Sudhin Mathur. "At present we are working closely with four major outsourcers based in China, Sweden, Taiwan and Malaysia. We have provided them information on the Indian market. Now, it should be their call to take further action," Mathur added. SonyEricsson is the fourth largest sold mobile phone in India after Nokia, Samsung, Motorola. Also it is the fourth company to discuss the possibility of manufacturing mobile phones in India after Nokia, L.G. and Hyundai. While Nokia is currently finalizing its manufacturing location, L.G. has already started assembling them at its facility in Pune while Hyundai will set up a plant in the next two years. Despite being one of the largest manufacturers of mobile phones, Sony Ericsson still outsources the manufacturing to players like OEM like Flextronics and BMC (Beijing Mobile Corporation).
