Som Mittal takes over as NASSCOM chairman

NEW DELHI: NASSCOM, the apex industry association of software and service companies, Friday announced the appointment of Som Mittal, president and chief executive officer of Digital Globalsoft Ltd. as the chairman of NASSCOM for the year 2003-04. NASSCOM also announced the appointment of Mr. Jerry Rao, Chairman & CEO, MphasiS BFL Ltd. as Vice Chairman for the year 2003-04 and Mr. S. Ramadorai, CEO, Tata Consultancy Services as the Vice Chairman for the period 2004-05. The NASSCOM Executive Council ratified the appointment unanimously. The newly elected NASSCOM Executive Council will serve a term of two years between 2003 to 2005. The new council consists of 18 members and reflects a wide representation of the industry including members from the various sectors of the IT industry (list attached). Kiran Karnik, President, NASSCOM, said "Arun Kumar has done a great job of steering NASSCOM and the Indian Software industry in tough times to scale new heights. His energy and leadership has enabled the industry to identify new areas of growth, both in India as well as strengthen its presence globally." "We are delighted to have Som Mittal as the new Chairman of NASSCOM. He is widely recognized among the industry to have transformed Digital India from ‘hardware giant’ to a very profitable services company today. His global knowledge, experience and access apart from his user industry expertise will be of great value to NASSCOM. I am also glad that the industry’s two leading personalities, Jerry Rao and S. Ramadorai, have been elected to position as Vice Chairmen of NASSCOM", he added. Added, Arun Kumar, Past Chairman, NASSCOM, "The last year was a challenging and exciting year for NASSCOM and the industry. Faced with a tough global market, the industry has been able to successfully realign ourselves to get closer to our customers and also pro-actively communicate our strengths to global audiences." "It gives me great pleasure to welcome Som to takeover my role and continue the momentum the industry has maintained. I have had the opportunity to work with him closely in his past capacity as Vice Chairman and I am confident that his experience will assist us to a great extent in our future growth", he added. Speaking on his appointment, Som Mittal, Chairman, NASSCOM, said, "I am honoured to take on the role of the Chairman of NASSCOM from Arun who has done a commendable job in the given scenario. The task ahead for us at NASSCOM continues to be challenging in the present economic, regulatory and market environment and would require the industry to adopt a focused approach." "My endeavour will be to highlight India’s competitiveness globally and share best practices of success stories within the industry. We will continue to build on the successful global communications campaign and pro-actively reach new audiences. NASSCOM will also set up an ‘International Policy Working Group’ that will look at driving policy initiatives in areas such as WTO, Totalisation Agreements, Visa and Work Permit issues. SMEs are India’s future engine of the software industry and therefore we would devise a strategy to foster growth from SMEs and involve their active participation in industry initiatives", he added.
