Software Engineer - The 2nd best job of 2010

New York: For the second year in a row, job hunters will want to brush up their math, science and computer skills if they want to land a top-ranked, highly rewarding position. Being an actuary, calculating statistics to determine probability and risk, is the best job to have in 2010, according to a study released by CareerCast.com, a job search site that analyzed 200 jobs in North America.
An actuary earns about $85,000 a year and has few physical demands, little stress, a good work environment and a positive outlook for employment and income growth. Using five key measurement criteria - stress, working environment, physical demands, income and hiring outlook - the 'Jobs Rated' report seeks to compare and contrast careers across a multitude of industries, skill levels and salary ranges, sorting them into a definitive list of jobs that can be called worst and best.
The second-best job is that of a software engineer, followed by computer systems analyst, biologist and historian, said CareerCast.com. What truly helps Software Engineer stand out from other career choices is its hiring outlook. With low unemployment compared to the national average and projected job growth of nearly 45 percent through 2016. In fact, Software Engineer currently has the best hiring outlook of any available job in 2010.
Being a roustabout (a laborer typically performing temporary, unskilled work) has been rated as the worst, followed by lumberjack, ironworker, dairy farmer and welder. A roustabout job typically pays about $31,000 a year, with high unemployment and a negative outlook for growth, the study said.
Switching to many of the best jobs would mean returning to school, said Tony Lee, Publisher of CareerCast.com's 2010 Jobs Rated Report. This is its 12th annual study. The worst jobs tend to require working outdoors regardless of the weather, have elements of physical danger and do not pay very well, he said. other industry the unjust tax breaks that the
IT sector enjoys and see the growth in those
sectors.As it is , sectors such as infra
employ a wider cross-section of our indian

4: Just because a job involves sitting in front
of a PC in a AC office is not sufficient
reason for it to be called as the second best
in the world.I left a junk profile job in
infosys to come back to chemical engineering
and design refinery processes.My present job
has much better profile and better
growth.Becoming a code coolie may look
attractive now but is a dead end street in
the long term.As it is infosys will soon have
the "glorious" distinction of beng the
largest employer in the world.

So definitely, this is not a convincing story. Rather, i agree the fact that software jobs might pay well than other industry, though. So i wish to see a big boom in all industries and hopefully the employment rate should shoot up.

Hi Friends, I'm a typical Mechanical Engineer with nearly 15 years of experience in Product development (Mechanical components), & Design Engg background working with ISRO as a Scientist & Development Lead.
I don't think that, a software engineer job is the 2nd preferred job in India.
People choose their career by their interest/capability & sometimes luck.
Moreover, there are millions of graduates working on some outsourced projects & claiming themselves as software engineers, which is not true.
I've met lot of professionals from other branches like chemical/ civil/ electrical who are holding distinguishing positions in some of the fortune 500 companies & leading some of the projects in Infrastructure/ Power/ Education. They are ally happy with the work they do & they ARE NOT software enginers.
On the other hand, there are professionals who have worked with fortune 25 IT giants in programming, systems who are not keen in pursuing their career because of the learning curve & have engined their career in other domain (apart from IT).
Our society & the system gets completed only when all of us contribute to our nation & help in maintaining a steady growth in GDP, low inflation, rather than earning some degrees & getting settled in US/ UK to convert $ to Re.
Please don't think that, a software engineer is the only person who's duly respected in the society.

Regarding Software engineering & life in a cubicle...I have had enough of staring at computer screens till my eyes hurt & back ache, & I would kill just to get away from the desk.
There are lot of other jobs where one can apply the same or less intellect/creativity & get better rewards, both financially & also emotionally. What are they ?...
I guess it all depends on ones outlook. A job is a good job if you get satisfaction from it. Once you are happy success follows because you put your heart into it.
The key is to follow your heart & do what you enjoy & not let you life be dictated by some poorly researched statistic.
