Smokers have lower IQs than non-smokers
New York: We have heard that smoking is injurious to health and smokers are very prone to diseases, but new study states that cigarette smokers also have lower IQs than non-smokers.
According to a study of over 20,000 Israeli military recruits, it is found that young men who smoked a pack of cigarettes a day or more had IQ scores 7.5 points lower than non-smokers. "Adolescents with poorer IQ scores might be targeted for programmes designed to prevent smoking," said Dr Mark Weiser and colleagues from Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer, who did the study. The researchers looked at 2,0211 men who were 18-year-old and recruited into the Israeli military. The group did not include anyone who was having major mental health problems.

According to the study, the average IQ for non-smokers was about 101, while it was 94 for men who had started smoking before entering the military. The IQ steadily dropped as the number of cigarettes smoked increased, from 98 for people who smoked one to five cigarettes daily to 90 for those who smoked more than a pack a day. IQ scores from 84 to 116 are considered as the average intelligence.

With all due respect, I would like to state that the premise has been used to arrive at a wrong inference here. Smoking leads to people having low IQ scores. But that does mean smoking is the only reason for low IQ scores. So it cant be inferred that Adolescents with poorer IQ scores would infact be smokers and so programmes should be designed to target them.
Sorry if I am incorrect.. Just wanted to avoid any misleading here...

3: Why the govenment has to put ban on cigar or
liquor. Do any government ask their people to
smoke or drink. Everyone knew smoking is
injurious then why they want to smoke.
Control on anything should come from oneself
not from outside or on force. Just think..
Smokers should think the consequences of
smoking and they should stop. How you are
expecting government to stop smokers from
smoking.Even if the ban is made , do u think
smoking will be eradicated,(Who knows just
like an illegal drug , a illegal cigar may
come to exist, is there any assurance this
wont happen ..again it becomes an another big
issue for the government to stop this)

7: Smoking is widely accepted as hazzard to the
human life. Then why don't legally ban its
production rather than running awareness
program. I know while doing so there are two
industries would suffer - Cigar as well as
hospitals. Govt should take a bold step if
they really concerned about the coming
generation. It is really pathetic to see
young population falls into the craze of
smoking which will surely harm them after a
while.
If I would have given an opportunity the two things I going to ban is cigar and liquor. A total ban...........

9: Hey Mr.Haneesh this's the only reason that
govt. is not banning of its production...I
think there will b no future steps for this
from the Govt side...it's only us who should
refrain ourselves from this so-called hazard.
