Singapore firm launches low-priced PC in India

NEW DELHI: Esys Distribution, a Singapore-based IT component distributor, Wednesday announced the launch of low-priced Internet ready computers in India with a view to grab a larger share of the country's growing hardware market. The personal computer brand, ePC, will be retailed at 9,990 in all major cities in the country and will have applications for office and household users, said a company statement issued here. The computer will come loaded with Linux-based operating system but the consumers will have the option of installing other operating systems and applications, said the statement. The computer said its association with leading global hardware vendors including Aztech, Hynix, LG, Seagate and VIA has helped it sell computer at a sharply lower price. "ePC will lead the creation of a value segment in PC market in India. It is natural that other brands will also follows us in the same segment and in turn help expand PC penetration levels," said Vikas Goel, chairman of Esys Distribution Group. According to market research conducted by the company, computers priced at less than 10,000 will be a major catalyst in expanding the available market of two million computer units a year by another 50 percent in one year. "Esys will be able to leverage its position as leading component distributor to deliver the value promise. We are expanding our existing marketing and service support facilities to emerge as the major player," said Goel.
