Singapore PM applauds Indian heritage, cultural celebrations

Singapore: Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has applauded the annual Indian New Year celebration here, saying such events bring the local community and new citizens together. The celebration, themed "Rhythms in Unity", showcased Indian contemporary dances and music as well as various Indian traditions with an aim to create greater awareness among residents on the rich Indian culture, according to a report by the Channel News Asia. "Events Iike this help to bring our community together, to bring us together as one people to celebrate our own heritage, to remember where we came from, our forefathers and our cultures, and at the same time to let our different communities to also learn about one another," said Lee, who was guest of honour at the celebration. "Through this (event), we become more harmonious, one united people, not just among Singaporeans, but new citizens who come here, so they can build links with original Singaporeans and strike roots in Singapore," he added. The combined celebration was held yesterday to mark the Indian New Year that falls on various dates on the Hindu calendar. It was organised by an Indian Activity Executive Committees (IAECs) under Lee''s constituency.
