Simputer forays into global market

Simputer will soon foray into the global market. India plans to launch this device in Italy at Milan's IT and communications fair SMAU 2002, to be held during October 24-28, a statement by the Indian software industry's representative Nasscom said Monday.

NEW DELHI: Short for simple, inexpensive and multilingual hand-held computer, the Simputer was developed by a team of scientists at the prestigious Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. The inventors plan to use software that reads Web pages aloud in native Indian languages, targeting the 35 percent of illiterate Indians, the Nasscom statement said. The team has reportedly developed its own version of the Web's formatting language to turn text into understandable Hindi, Kannada and Tamil speech. Nasscom said it will take a high-level delegation headed by Minister for Communications and IT Pramod Mahajan and over 10 Indian IT companies to represent India at the five-day exhibition. Tata Consultancy Services, Satyam Computer Services, Nucleus Software Exports, Prologix Software Solutions and Servion Global Solutions are among the companies showcasing their products and services in the fair.
