SHIMLA: A 67 million plan to promote silk farming will soon unfold in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh. "The central silk board has approved the plan that will encourage some 4,700 rural families to rear silkworms and 600 hectares will be brought under mulberry plantation for the purpose," an official said. "Twenty-one silkworm rearing centres will also be set up to sustain the sericulture industry," he said. "The plan is part of a development programme for improvement, generation of employment and overall development of sericulture in the state, with the state government pooling in 8.5 million." The plan would also support oak-tassar sericulture and set up silk reeling and marketing facilities with the assistance of the silk board. "Sericulture is being promoted as a subsidiary occupation to augment the income of farmers from agriculture. Some 7,000 sericulture families, spread over 1,250 villages, produce 150 tonnes of silk cocoons," the official informed. At present Bilaspur and Mandi districts alone account for two-thirds of the production of silk cocoons in the state.
