Silicon Labs announces expansion in Asia

AUSTIN: Silicon Laboratories Inc. (Nasdaq:SLAB) Friday announced its expansion into Asia with offices in China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Silicon Laboratories' direct presence in these countries provides enhanced technical support to Silicon Laboratories' rapidly expanding customer base in the region. Silicon Laboratories' customers in Asia, including Samsung Electronics, BenQ Corporation, Compal Communications and Panasonic Mobile Communications, design high-performance communications products including GSM/GPRS cellular handsets, DSL modems, cable set-top boxes, optical networking equipment, central office line cards and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) systems. "By expanding our infrastructure in Asia, we are able to provide real-time support that enables our customers to simplify the design process and accelerate their time-to-market," said Dan Artusi, president and chief operating officer of Silicon Laboratories. "Our dedicated local support and engineering expertise clearly demonstrates our commitment to our customers' success." Asia is the world's largest market for semiconductors and a major contributor to the double-digit growth that the semiconductor industry is expecting in 2003. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Asia represents 36 percent of the world's telecommunication subscribers and is expected to have more than one billion new subscribers by the end of the decade. Asia is home to 33 percent of the world's Internet users and 47 percent of ADSL users. These opportunities represent a tremendous market for Silicon Laboratories' customers who leverage the company's leading ICs as key building blocks for their solutions. Silicon Laboratories' diverse product line includes GSM/GPRS transceivers, RF synthesizers, direct access arrangements (DAAs), embedded modems, subscriber line interface circuits (SLICs), analog front ends, high-speed physical layer ICs and precision clock ICs.
