Bangalore: Sikh Community members residing in the San Francisco Bay area have complained to the US officials about the severe discrimination they face at their workplace. They also demanded the Federal Government to take the matter seriously and be more alert in handling such crimes.

Nearly hundreds of Sikhs met U.S. attorney Melinda Haag on Sunday to discuss about how hard they struggle with intolerance and bigotry, frequently at their workplace. They met Haag at a Sikh Center in the East Bay Community at El Sobrante, reports the Contra Costa (Calif.) Times.

There are about 25 million Sikhs living in various parts of the world and majority of them are in India. Sikhs who met Haag also expressed anxiety over the fact that they are often misunderstood to be Muslims.

The members of the community said that the FBI treats anti-Sikh hate crimes as one among the many issues affecting people from the Middle-east and the Muslims, without giving them any specific importance, reports Times.

Haag said that Sikh religion stresses on equality among all races, beliefs and sexes without any sort of discrimination, yet they are being the victims of prejudice.

"Especially after you learn about all that, it's hard to imagine why anyone would want to discriminate against the Sikh community," the Times quotes Haag as saying.

Haag assured the members that she would figure out the matter with FBI officials.
