WASHINGTON: Sigma-Aldrich Corporation, a Missouri-based chemical company, plans to build an $8 million laboratory scale production complex at Hyderabad in India. The building spread over 50,000 square feet will eventually house 70 to 80 new chemists doing contract research, process development and other work primarily for pharmaceutical customers, said a company statement. The facility will serve as a "feeder site" for the company's production operations in Germany, Switzerland, Britain and the US. The firm produces biochemical and organic chemical products used in research, biotechnology, pharmaceutical development and chemical manufacturing. The facility, expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2005, will be funded from the company's $88 million capital budget for 2004. Jai Nagarkatti, Sigma's president of scientific research and a native of Hyderabad, said the building was the next logical step in the firm's expansion in India. "From simple beginnings as a liaison office in 1992, our business in India has grown rapidly, doubling to just under $11 million in sales over the past three years," he said.
