Bangalore: Will Sify Technologies become the Amazon of India? While Sify's core business in India and abroad is creating networks and Internet infrastructure, it is also developing applications and interface technologies to become the Amazon of India, CEO, Raju Vegesna told Dow Jones Newswires in an interview. According to Vegesna, creating a cheaper way to store data and manage infrastructure is the company's core competence, but the goal is to build on top of that business model and offer tools to learn, buy and communicate for the Indian consumer market. Wall Street Journal reports that, for its corporate clients, Sify aims to build two more datacenters each year going forward, as India's companies modernize and take the back-office outside the four walls of their buildings. Like in the U.S., rooms filled with servers to stock data are beginning to migrate to specialized datacenters. Sify is using the models and experience developed in India as the testing ground for global products. The question now is, "how to make it cookie-cutter, more cost-effective," said Vegesna. Sify is growing its Internet Protocol (IP) penetration across India, operating in more than 450 cities and towns. But, the company reports that Internet penetration now is at just four percent of India's population, and there is major potential to expand. Today Sify has more than 2,000 corporate customers.
