Share of offshore software exports touch 60% in 2002-03

NEW DELHI: Despite stiff resistance to outsourcing to low cost destinations like India, offshore exports have risen to 60 per cent of total software exports at Rs 20,700 crore and are poised to grow further in the coming years, according to the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC). In 2002-03, total software exports were Rs 34,500 crore and of this offshore export were to the tune of Rs 20,700 crore accounting for 60 per cent of the total exports, ESC said. In 2001-02, the offshore export was Rs 15,500 crore accounting for 56 per cent of the total software exports. In 1999-2000, offshore exports were Rs 6920 crore out of total software exports of Rs 17300 crore. In 2000-01, offshore exports shot up to Rs 12,100 crore including ITeS, posting a growth of 74 per cent as compared to the previous year. "There is a discernible increase in the offshore exports and the indications are that this share will further increase in the coming years," said ESC executive director DK Sareen, adding this did not include export of IT services.
