Fremont: After the massive earthquake that hit Sikkim and parts of Eastern India and Nepal, Sewa International volunteers are working on providing relief to the victims. "More than 100,000 homes have been destroyed in Sikkim and thousands of people have become homeless. With 72 deaths, several injuries and collapsed transportation and communication systems Sikkim is nearly devastated. Volunteers from Sewa's partner organizations in India have started reaching out to the affected families" said Professor Sree Sreenath, president of Sewa International. Volunteers from Sewa's partner organizations will provide immediate relief to the distressed people by building temporary shelters, serving meals and supplying clothes, medicine and other necessities. They will assess the damage and develop long-term relief plans based on community needs. Sewa International is requesting individuals, citizen groups, community organizations and companies to generously donate their time and tax-deductible monetary contributions to Sewa. These donations will help start or strengthen many relief projects being planned in Sikkim and other earthquake-hit areas.
