CAT goes online, students go offline
By   siliconindia news bureau
Sunday,29 November 2009, 18:49 hrs
Bangalore: After a disappointing start to the online CAT, the authorities have given different theories to the problem ranging from a virus attack to server crash. However, in the eyes of students who are left in the lurch, things seem to be different.

With his eyes set on the top B-schools in the country, Srinath R.P. had prepared hard to bell the Common Admission Test (CAT) this year. His exam was scheduled to be held at R.V. College of Engineering, Bangalore at 10 am on 28 November. But, after reaching the centre, during the process of checking, Srinath got the shock of his life when he was informed by the authorities that his name was not downloading in the Prometric site.

"The authorities got in touch with Prometric/IIM authorities for more than three hours, but could not solve the problem. Then they told me that I can't take my CAT exam since my name is not downloading into the test site Roster," says Srinath. After the poor response, the authorities gave him Prometric Candidate Care contact number and asked him to call them for rescheduling the exam.

With a shimmer of hope left in his heart to take the exam this time, Srinath tried contacting Prometric, but this didn't put an end to his misery. "Even though I have tried contacting the number more than 20 times. There is no response and it only goes for redialing," says a dismayed Srinath, who is among thousands of candidates facing similar kinds of problem after the CAT went online. The students are also unsure about the rescheduled dates for their exam. The irony is that though India is touted as a technology hub, the dream of one of the prestigious exams in the country to go online is short-lived and the students are left in the dark.

Students who arrived at Garden City College in Bangalore were shocked when officials told them that the test had been called off because of a faulty server. There was complete confusion at the venue as none of the administrative officers knew what was happening and why the server was not working. Students held a dharna inside the exam hall.

Around 5,000 students will now have to take the CAT afresh at new dates throwing the original 10-day schedule into disarray. Technical experts blamed U.S. based Prometric - the agency entrusted with carrying out the first online version of CAT - for underestimating the magnitude of the task. "They didn't even have a Plan B," said a top official of another firm that runs online examinations, on condition of anonymity. Prometric said it has quarantined 50 labs across 14 centres on Sunday, and blamed the fiasco on a virus attack that went undetected.

The agency said that the problem was being sorted out, and the test was being rescheduled for the several affected candidates who would be informed through SMS and emails. A new date however, brings in new set of problems for the aspirants many of whom are employed and find it difficult to reschedule.

The seven IIMs and about 150 top B-schools base their admissions on CAT scores, and this year the exams were moved online hoping that it would speed up the process for the institutes and the 2.4 lakh candidates. IIMs' CAT panel gave the task to Prometrics, which runs online exams like GRE and TOEFL. However, with the situation taking a chaotic turn, IIM directors took stock of the situation and held a video conference on Sunday.

IIM Ahmedabad Director Samir Barua said computer labs were being sanitized. "We need to find out from where the virus attack happened," he said. Around 100 Prometric engineers have been pressed into service, said IIM Bangalore Director Pankaj Chandra.

"We, along with Prometric and NIIT, are trying to figure out where the problem lies. Since these computers were located in institutes, their backbone was used to download the software. In some places there were serious virus attacks. So we blocked some affected centres and others which we felt might get affected to clean up the computer system, remove viruses and reload the software," he said.

1: Mr Sibal, in India there is diff between law and practice and yu have studied law only while Laloo has done practically everything not to talk about Maya who is both.

The site of prometric states:
Prometric offers the most extensive, professional and secure testing network (our channel) in the world where tests are delivered in over 160 countries in over 7,500 locations.

APTC Sites
Authorized Professional Testing Center: a network of over 4,000 testing centers that mostly deliver exams that lead to certifications for many of the IT industry’s leading companies such as Microsoft, CompTia, Apple, HP and many others.

Now it depends on the agency who arranged this contract as a authorised centre for India.

But anyway it has tarnished the image of India due to which we, inspite of high professional skills acquired from India, are linguishing in North America for a good job.

3: It is such a big test to be conducted by our country. It is really a poor management as they are not being conducted in the expected manner. Another great disaster is not arranging the alternative when such cases happens. Better have to see that such situations should never happen in the future because many of the people write this test by facing many struggles but when they face such a situation it is really a tough time for them.

4:Prometric has almost made mockery of the prestigious Institute like IIMs. I wonder if the task would have been handed over to some India bases company like Infosys or Wipro, such could have been better handled. Also, there should have been a back up taking into the consideration that online test was being held for the first time.

6: India is still lagging behind in many aspects, this is one fresh example we have. You are taking count of the students, not understanding the magnitude of the situation. Damn bullshit, show off man. This happens when we too much expectations from people, overestimate them. Same that happened with Indian Cricket team. Preaching and teaching two pole apart thing man. When the f*&^ this difference will be mitigated. You are counting problems not finding learnig and defencing yourself, you got that designation just by reading some piece of papers. Man you dont know the importance of people then i have a serious doubt on your education. You are just like a computer which work on the basis of operating system it has, no emotion. Our people need to change the attitude otherwise only gap will grow not lower end people.I dont care about how many inferences you draw out of this writting but it is important to figure out meaning of every thing in your terms.

7: Offline CAT was extremely exciting and suited to Indian conditions. It was exciting because even before the D-Day media was agog with the news of CAT and on the day of CAT it was just an awesome analysis time, whwn students were glued to the television sets or hooked to the net. It suited to India conditions because whether we like it or not when it comes to technological application for the masses, considering our infrastructure,we are poor in performance, and this gross failure proves that even the management brains of IIM whom we think are genius gods in a country which is highly mediocre, failed to take even this common thing of mass technological application into cognizance.I do wonder when the director of IIM-Bangalore says that it is a minority number of student who have been affected, as if student for him is just a headcount and their efforts are meaningless.

11: Prometric is not the right agency to give this huge task. I wonder how they manage to conduct GRE and TOEFL. After making some silly software mistales, they had proved that they are not the right choice for this on 9th September only.
Or, another point can be that the IIMs worked ina bit haste. May be they have tried and tested atleast a couple of agencies for this task before actually jumping into the online market.
Now, I can only hope that IIMs conduct this CAT fairly and complete it somehow. And do hope that the Prometric learn a serious lesson from this episode (which they sud hv done in September itself).

23: It seems funny that a peculiar virus (or malware) managed to disrupt the online CAT exam. None of the authorities have even given out the name of the said virus. A more viable explanation would be that the servers did not take the load. This has happened before. IGNOU (with Yahoo!) conducted an online exam that ended in a fiasco for the same reason. IIMs could have learned their lessons from those mistakes.

It is also funny that CAT has to be held over a span of 10 days. I seriously doubt if IIMs really expect the question papers not to be leaked just because of the copyright act, IT act and some other legal jargon. If the questions are leaked, it is certainly unfair to the students who take the exam first. And perhaps there will be another online re-test.

As for Prometric, I think they are one of the best testing agencies. But I don't think they are prepared to handle 2.4 lakh candidates over 10 days. If you visit their testing centres, you will find 5 or 6 cabins (a couple of them empty too) for students. They may handle more students (in a given year), but since the exams they conduct are year round exams, there's no question of overloading the servers. Nor will they handle 2.4 lakh candidates in 10 days. So, it probably is a case of underestimation of load on their part.

Such incidents always get examinees in a tight spot. Those who go to attempt CAT again will probably be wondering if there will be another server crash during the exam. Come to think of it, maybe it is IIMs way of identifying the smart managers of future India. After all, when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

All the best to all the CATters :) . May the best and most deserving man/woman win.

27: It is one of the examples showing the amount of care one take on their corporate/personal computers against virus attacks. Norton survey had shown that most of the comps in India, least bother about the virus and internet threats. It is very bad that it affected the students, who has to take once again the pain and tension about their exam. So sorry for them and hope the number should be very very less....

The major responsibilty goes to ppl who even didn't think about another plan. If they did it problem might be solved earlier after some delay.... Any way good lesson to be more careful in next time.

29: It is not that our IT infrastructure can handle the load.
I feel IIMS should consult railways on how to run mission critical infrastructure. What is this virus thing absolute rubbish , Where was the virus or worm and does prometric
have any experience in handling such tests across distributed networks.

IIMs committed the same mistake as other agencies do just go online without understanding the implications.

Poor management is the right word.

31: The only thin to care about software is to see that it runs. If the contracted company didnt have a backup plan - IIM's or organizing committee(OC) are to be blamed for this.

It is simple business. For Prometric it is easy to not have a backup plan. The OC should have checked for all the possible outcomes and prepared for them. Additionally they shud have chosen a third party informed(expert) inspector on the situation which can judge both the systems and the software for vulnerability. (Only if OC knew enuf computers to think that such a thing cud easily turn into a fiasco).

Feel sorry for all the ppl who will have to now travel unreserved after they cancel their original reservations to get to the exam centers

35: To Siliconindia - I had my CAT 2009 exam scheduled on Saturday 28th November in R.V. College of Engineering, Bangalore (Test Site Code: IILDC) at 10:00 AM. But, after reaching the test site, during the check in process, i was informed by authorities that my name is not downloading in the Prometric site (Roster). After trying for some 3.5 hours with Prometric candidate care people, centre officials told me that i cannot take my exam because my name is not downloading into the site(Roster). They gave me Prometric candidate care no (18001039293) and told that i have to call this number to reschedule my exam. I called this number and was informed that i have to send a mail to "cat.candidateservice@prometric.com"

It is highly irresponsible and careless attitude from Prometric side that they were not able to resolve my issue even after 3 hours. I had scheduled this exam specifically for today, since i am a working professional and cannot attend the exam on Weekdays.

I have sent mail to Prometric on 28th itself requesting rescheduling the exam on either Sunday 29th November or Saturday 5th December or Sunday 6th December. Till now (30th Nov,10.45 am there is no reply from Prometric.

Request you to highlight this matter to Prometric as such problem is not highlighted either by media or any other agency.

I am already registered with Siliconindia.

Regards,

Srinath R.P.

Probably, IIMs authorities would have checked with this IT infrastructure with all the Prometric centres before giving this contract. Anyway this shouldn't be the case with one of the India's reputed competitive exam. Atleast there should be some plan B in case of any failure.
