Bangalore: Skype has said the main cause of the recent outage was that some servers that enabled offline instant messaging were overloaded. In a blog post, Skype CIO Lars Rabbe explained that this overload caused delayed responses to Skype clients. Last week millions of Skype users could not communicate as the Internet telephony system was disrupted following a major technical glitch. A bug was responsible in a certain Skype for Windows client (version 5.0.0152) where the delayed responses could not be processed properly resulting in the clients' version to crash. However users of latest Skype for Windows (version 5.0.0.156), older versions of Skype for Windows (4.0 versions), Skype for Mac, Skype for iPhone, Skype on your TV, and Skype Connect or Skype Manager for enterprises remained unaffected from the problem. Skype on its part has provided a fix to v5.0 of the Windows software. It has also mentioned that it will work toward ways to detect problems in future more rapidly to avoid such incidents altogether. This will involve constant reviewing of its core systems that support the Skype user base.
