MUMBAI: The Bombay Stock Exchange Benchmark 30-share Index (Sensex) today soared past 9,800 level for the first time in a bullish trend during morning trade. The rise was prompted by the upbeat mood in global markets together with renewed purchases by institutional investors. The Sensex opened with a wide gap of about 79 points at 9,764.26 against previous close of 9,685.74 and later spurted to a new intra-trade peak of 9,809.69 before being quoted at 9,805.65 at 10.30 am, up by 119.91 points over Wednesday's close. Driven by a strong overnight stocks rally on Wall Street, the market started on a strong footing and moved towards the magic 10,000 mark during early trade in line with a sharp upsurge in Asian markets. Foreign Institutional Investors were believed to be heavy buyers after a slowdown in inflows in the last couple of weeks. Operators and retail investors also made fresh commitments on the opening day of new contract in the derivatives.
