Sensex gains over 9 percent last week

Bangalore: The Indian equities wrapped the week with a massive gain of 9.2 percent on the back of good global cues and heavy institutional buying seen among the foreign investors (FIIs) as compared to last week slump of 9.4 percent. The markets last week soared on comments by ministers that the government will introduce laws in Parliament to push reforms and that it has identified a few state-run companies for selling small stakes. The 30 share index, Sensex jumped 1,240.7 points (9.19 percent), to 14,744.92 in the week ended July 17, 2009. On the other hand, the broad based NSE Nifty surged 371.05 points (9.27 percent), to 4,374.95 in the same period. Major gainers over the week in the sectoral indices were Realty gained 17.62 percent, Auto 11.01 percent, Metal rose 10.04 percent, PSU climbed 9.95 percent, and IT went up 9.67 percent. India's benchmark wholesale price index (WPI), annual inflation stood at -1.21 percent for the week ended July 4, 2009 as compared -1.55 percent a week ago. The official Wholesale Price Index for 'All Commodities' rose by 0.7 percent for the week ended July 4. The annual rate of inflation was at 12.19% during the corresponding week of the previous year.
