Sensex closes 143 pts up, drops below 11,000

MUMABI: The 30 benchmark BSE index closed 143.03 points up at 10,809.35 in a comparatively stable trading session. The BSE Sensex rose to hit 384.45 points high at 11,050.77 after it surged over 250 points within minutes of the opening of trade. Similarly, the NSE Nifty which opened flat at 3,177.70 rose to the day's high 100.25 points at 3,277.95. The Nifty index closed 35.80 points at 3,213.50. Both the indices surged in the opening trade taking cue from the recovery in global markets. The Sensex maintained a stable trading session above the 11,000 levels. It started slipping down from its higher levels after the mid-session to close at 10,800 levels. However, the Sensex continued to be up over 250 points backed by sustained buying in index heavyweights. Auto, energy, steel & cement stocks were among the gainers while power, pharma saw profit booking.
