Sensex Snaps Three-Day Rally, Closes 312 Points Lower

Mumbai: A benchmark index for Indian equities markets fell sharply to close 312 points lower as traders booked profits after a three-day rally. Negative cues from European markets too added to the downtrend. The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the BSE, which opened at 17,189.75 points, closed at 16,852.62 points (provisional), down 312.92 points or 1.82 percent from its previous close at 17,165.54 points. The 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange too closed lower at 5,047.4 points, down 2.05 percent. Broader markets also saw widespread selling. The BSE midcap index closed 0.89 percent down, and the BSE small cap index was ruling 0.83 percent lower. The BSE 100 was down 1.82 percent. RIL closed 3.36 percent down, while Infosys ended 3.23 percent lower. The market breadth was negative with 1,188 stocks advancing, 1,661 on the decline and 104 remaining unchanged.
