Sensex Ends 470 Points Higher; Up Almost 3 Percent

Mumbai: A benchmark index for Indian equities provisionally closed 466 points higher as traders in a big way bought into stocks battered in recent weeks.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 15,890.8 points, closed at 16,161.98 points (provisional) -- 466.55 points or 2.97 percent up from its previous close at 15,695.43 points.

The 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also ended higher at 4,859.05 points, up 3.16 percent or 149 points from its previous close.

Broader markets also rose with the BSE 500 index closing 2.59 percent up. The BSE midcap index closed 1.49 percent higher while the BSE smallcap index moved up 1.77 percent.

All 13 sectoral indices on the BSE were in the green with metals, banking and energy stocks were among the gainers.
