NEW DELHI: Assistant US Trade Representative Ashley Wills is in India on a three-day visit to discuss a slew of multilateral and bilateral trade issues. During his three-day visit, which ends Thursday, Wills will meet senior government officials and private sector leaders, said a US embassy statement issued Wednesday. Wills met several senior government officials and representatives of private sector organisations, including the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry in New Delhi Wednesday. The purpose was to meet with senior officials of the new Indian government and discuss the latest developments in agriculture trade talks and other World Trade Organisation issues, said the statement. "India is emerging as an important player in the global trading system," Wills was quoted as saying. "During my trip I want to listen and to learn as well as explore the growing economic linkages between the US and India." Merchandise trade between the US and India totalled more than $17.4 billion in 2003.
