Semiconductor start-ups attract laid off engineers
Bangalore: A large number of semiconductor professionals are preferring to join the Indian semiconductor start ups after being laid off from MNC's like Freescale, Cypress Semiconductor, Analog Devices and Cadence, reports Financial Chronicle. Foreseeing an increase in demand from the next quarter, the Indian semiconductor companies are grabbing around 5-10 professionals each. "Global semiconductor firms posted credible results in first quarter of this year and hope to see continued growth, so small Indian firms are beginning to hire in small numbers to cater to the demand. New development projects are expected after July," said S Uma Mahesh, CEO of Indrion, a Bangalore-based start-up working on sensors. Satisfied with their job content, these engineers are turning down offers from big companies like IBM, Nokia Siemens and Mphasis. These professionals want to stay with core semiconductor development, as they consider it as an opportunity they might lose if they join a services company. "Working for start-ups and smaller companies comes with opportunities that aren't available in larger set-ups. The pay is better and the job role is also bigger compared to the one you get at larger organizations. Also, the learning curve is very high," said Vivek S, who was laid off by Freescale, when it closed its Bangalore unit. Companies like Cosmic Circuits, Sonim Technologies, w2bi and Xambala are recruiting experienced semiconductor professionals.
